How to Use System Restore in Windows to Recover Your System

System Restore is a feature in Windows that allows users to revert their computer's state (including system files, installed applications, Windows Registry, and system settings) to a previous point in time. This can be particularly useful for recovering from system malfunctions or other issues that may have arisen due to recent changes.

Examples:

  1. Creating a System Restore Point:

To manually create a restore point, follow these steps:

    • Open the Start menu and type "Create a restore point" in the search bar. Select the matching result to open the System Properties window.
    • In the System Protection tab, ensure that protection is turned on for the drive you want to protect.
    • Click on "Create" to open the dialog box for creating a restore point.
    • Enter a description for the restore point (e.g., "Before installing XYZ software") and click "Create."

This process will save the current state of your system, allowing you to revert back to it if needed.

  2. Restoring Your System to a Previous State:

If your system is not functioning correctly, you can restore it to a previous state using these steps:

    • Open the Start menu and type "System Restore" in the search bar. Select "Create a restore point" from the results.
    • In the System Protection tab, click on "System Restore."
    • Follow the prompts in the System Restore wizard to choose a restore point and restore your system.

Note: System Restore does not affect personal files, but it will remove apps, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point was created.

  3. Executing System Restore via Command Prompt:

You can also execute System Restore using the Command Prompt:

    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator. You can do this by typing "cmd" in the Start menu, right-clicking on Command Prompt, and selecting "Run as administrator."
    • Type the following command and press Enter:
      rstrui.exe
    • This command will open the System Restore wizard, where you can follow the prompts to restore your system.
